Buhari accepts Onnoghen’s resignation

•Writes appearing CJN on appointment of 5 justices
President Muhammadu Buhari has accepted the voluntary retirement of the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen.

Justice Onnoghen was suspended over points bordering on false belongings.

Presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu in a press release final night time, stated the voluntary retirement of the Chief Justice was efficient from Could 28, 2019.

He stated the President thanked Justice Onnoghen for his service to Nigeria and wished him one of the best of retirement life.

He stated the president had written the Performing Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, on the appointment of further 5 Justices of the Supreme Courtroom of Nigeria.

The President wrote: ‘‘Pursuant to the provisions of Part 230(2) A&B of the Structure of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), I’m happy to request that you simply provoke in earnest the method of appointing further 5 Justices of the Supreme Courtroom of Nigeria to make the complete complement of 21 Justices as supplied by the aforementioned provisions of the Structure.

‘‘That is consistent with the Authorities’s Agenda of repositioning the Judiciary usually and Supreme Courtroom specifically for better effectivity, with a view to lowering the backlogs of appeals pending on the Supreme Courtroom.’’
